Artists - Dzine

Dzine

Вorn Carlos Rolon 1970 in Chicago.
He lives and works in Chicago.

Street culture, design and DJ music – these are the three pillars of the Chicago based artist Dzine  oeuvre. The selection of his pseudonym itself evokes a thought that the artist chooses a principle of creation of images, which is directly connected with design that transforms the environment of human existence into an unrealistic wonderful dream – the same way that street culture does, where psychedelic trips and apparitions are actively practiced.

For the Ukrainian Pavilion, considering the local environment - Venice - as a city where people can move around effectively only by water - Dzine chooses a motorboat as a ‘matrix’ for his fantasies on the lowriding theme. The choice of the means of transportation was also influenced by the artist’s impressions from his recent trip to Kyiv – Dzine was overwhelmed by the grandness of the Dnipro River, which became for him a ‘heart’ of Ukrainian identity. Also, the commissioner’s concept of the pavilion focused on a metaphor ‘inland sea’ played its role here…

The body of the boat is painted in the traditional blue and yellow colours of the Ukrainian flag. According to the lowrider credo of crude barbarian luxury. At the stern of the boat, the artist installs a DJ deck and plasma screens, which show his interview with Ukrainian and American youth. Dzine tries to peek into the future and understand how the ‘great American’ and ‘great Ukrainian’ dreams look like today…
